I gotta ask....

On the flute leak detection poll someone chose "other" for their method of leak detection. What other form is there? Is someone referring to the Mag Machine? Or something else?

Howdy--
The most effective, quickest method I ever used for flute leak detection was the play test. I worked very hard to keep my touch ultra-light, and depended on the ear to tell me where the leak was. (The pad with the leak is the one just before the note that sounds just a little weak, i.e., if D is weak, leak is in E.)
It takes a lot of practice, but I found that, when working with other experienced techs, I could "magically" tell them where their leaks were. Once I did that, they all wanted to know how I could tell just by hearing.
Again, the key is playing the flute like you're a terrified fourth-grader. Most techs are strong enough to MAKE a leaky flute play.

Probably the mag machine. The new JS Gold pads are installed using a leak light and the Mag helps too. Then there are the eclectic methods. A Ford R+D guy who made flutes for a hobby told me he checked for leaks with a speaker and a mic. He had a tiny speaker mounted on a stick that he placed under a tone hole and rotated a very unidirectional mic around the key cup to find leaks.

Said it worked very well. When he first told me I thought he was joking, but knowing the guy and his engineering credentials he clarified that is exactly the way it works and he happened to have had that stuff lying around.

The comments seem to 'fragmentedly' spread in both the poll area and this forum area. Perhaps it should be clarified, where poll-related comments should be made, and all these comments put together.

Hi Gordon,

Yea. My fault. I should have kept it with the poll but couldn't at the time. Since then I have enabled multiple comments/reviews/questions to be posted. I have to do some cleanup work and make a few changes to the way the site works this weekend. I'll take care of it then and will move this thread to the poll comments.
