hey everyone...

I recently tried out the split tip soldering trick (inspired by the Dana Rivard video). My gun started smoking. Am I doing anything wrong here!?! Fluke? Anything I should be careful of? It was brand spankin new... yes, smoking...

thanks for your thoughts,

Wow...am I understanding right?...the soldering gun itself actually started smoking and not just the part you were heating up?  I bet that made for some excitement in the shop.  Sounds like you may have gotten a lemon.

yeah... the gun...

smoking.
I was only using it for short periods of time (10-15 seconds on, 1-2 minutes off). The casing was zapped, from the inside, by what looked like a small burst of lightning... and then the whole gun started smoking like crazy. Melted part of the casing and blackened the inside.

I took it back to the hardware shop and exchanged it for a new one. Hasn't smoked yet, but there's still plenty of time to add another "smoking gun" story to the resume, yeah?
