Everyone knows the old adage, "If I only knew then what I know now..."
Well, here's a question that I'm sure everyone can answer....whether
you're right out of repair school or have been in the field 30 years:
WHAT are some of the things you know now that you wish you had known
when you were younger with regards to repair, the business, or just
life in general?

I've been repairing musical instruments for over 35 years and here are
some of the things I know now that I wish I had known earlier: 1.Don't
buy every interesting tool in sight! Some of them will never get used!
2.Make a heroic effort to research the market for my services: Will I
be repairing only clarinets, saxes, etc. or will I have a market that
demands repairs to the larger horns. On a more personal note, I would
take more time before getting married. LOL!

What a great thread!
i am in my last year at Keyano....and am beginning to research various
brands of saxophones.........and I am posing a question to all of our
mentors..you know you guys and gals with the years of hands on.....what
are some common issues, quirks, of "troblems' (troubles + problems)
with the more common rental horns......the Yamaha 20 series, boosey
& Hawks 400......armstrong...etc
Would love some imput...thanks in advance

1. You should never confuse your career with your life.
2. There is a fine line between interest and obsession, between hobby and insanity, and between repaired correctly and good enough.
3. Nobody's child is average or below. Just ask them.
4. There never was a rainbow without rain.
5. If a job starts to go south and you turn it around, every time you look away for even the tiniest instant, it will go south again.
6. You can learn not to do things that are extremely painful by doing them once. It takes several times to learn not to do things that are only moderately painful, and things that are only somewhat painful you will do again and again, UNLESS you make a huge effort to change.
7. There are good band directors, mediocre band directors, and bad band directors. No more of the bad ones will ever get fired than good ones.
8. Every band director you offend, even through no fault of your own, will be promoted to head of the music department of the school district, with control of all budgets.
9. Case repair is rarely profitable. (That doesn't mean you're not stuck having to do it.)
10. Don't be afraid of oboes! If you spend some time and energy learning to play an oboe, you will make a lot of money. I would be richer than Rockefeller if there were oboe bands. Of course, if there were oboe bands, we'd all go crazy.
11. You will probably be hungry at some point during your career as a technician. Don't worry, that's normal. Just keep doing your best, and you'll be all right.

Concerning # 10 in the above list, I've played and repaired
oboes since 9th grade. I've played in oboe bands. Where are
all these riches I so greatly deserve?!? I've been oboing for 35
years, and to quote Wednesday Adams, "be afraid, be very
afraid."
